At Aberdeen Hall, the development of extra-curricular activities is designed to provide the students with positive experiences that help to expand their knowledge, physical growth and development, and social and personal skills. Through our clubs and athletics programme we strive to help the students develop an appreciation for a variety of life experiences.
Clubs
Shakespeare Drama, Cross Country Running, Yoga, Ballet, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Spanish, Basketball, Golf, Field Hockey, Professional Vocals, and Musical Keyboards are only a sample of the many extra-curricular opportunities available at Aberdeen Hall. Clubs occur between 3:30pm and 4:30pm Monday through Thursday, and during lunch recess. All students are encouraged to participate and at last count, we had close to 90% of the students involved in at least one club. Ice skating and swimming are also offered to each of the students as part of the PE curriculum.
Aberdeen Hall provides our students with the opportunity to try as many new activities as possible. Clubs are operated by the teachers and specialist instructors, and some of the clubs have cost recovery fees. Each term, the clubs are adjusted depending on demand and interest.
We welcome parent suggestions for new clubs and welcome their help in clubs.
Below is a brief description of the clubs being offered this term.
Ballet
The Canadian School of Ballet in Kelowna is once again working with us to provide an introductory course for Pre-school to Grade Two. Students will learn a number of basic steps to music.
Craft Club
Miss Basiuk and Mr. Acree are running the Craft Club this term. The thematic focus will be multi-cultural crafts.
Spanish
Kristy McElroy will be leading the students through an exploration of Spanish vocabulary, culture and traditions.
Choir
Mrs. Hamm will be leading a choir club this term with a focus on learning vocal technique which will enable students to develop a broader range as well as increase their confidence with their singing voices. This club will NOT be available for Kindergarten students.
Yoga
Improve your flexibility and strength while having fun! Yoga is a great activity for both girls and boys. Mrs. Dunn and Mrs. Scherz will show you how to bend like a pretzel!
Robotics
Join Dr. Hofmann and Mr. Naziri for a fun-filled excursion in robotics – an open engineering challenge.
In this club, students will be exposed to:
• Real-world, hands-on problem solving experiences in computer science and engineering
• Basic exposure to software development, electronics and mechanics.
• Participating in regional, national and international junior Robocup rescue and soccer challenges.
Video and Film
Lights, Camera, Action! The video and film production club will introduce students to the process of film making. We will be planning, shooting and editing short productions using still images and video. All Grade 6-9 students are invited to take part in the fun.
Model Making
Whether you are interested in airplanes, boats, cars or even Lego creations, bring your unmade models in to Model Making Club and let your imagination run wild! In this club, students will be assisted by Miss Bryden in building a scale model of their choice. Students are required to provide their own scale models as well as any materials required for construction.
Music and Movement
Ana-Maria Kiss started dancing at the age of 10. She has taught classical ballet, modern, character and ballroom dancing to all ages. She received her degree as an elementary French teacher in Romania. Music and movement is based on an exercise that is aimed at the development of the coordination, correct posture and mobility of the child. The course will be accompanied with music at all times, so the sense of rhythm and a general contact with music itself and dance steps will be made possible in a friendly, but disciplined atmosphere. The students will cover different styles including ballet, modern and Spanish dance.
Cross-Country Skiing
Students with their own Cross Country skis are welcome to join this club. We will be learning and practicing basic techniques. If there is a lack of snow, we will provide a variety of outdoor activities and dry-land training. Please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately for winter conditions.
Ping-Pong
We will be learning some new techniques and skills to the game of ping-pong, playing lots of games and then having some singles and doubles tournaments. Come along and have some fun!
