Course Content Overview Ancient Civilizations

Grade 7 Social Studies begins with an examination of archeology, the development of civilization and ancient peoples.  Students participate in a mock archeological dig.  This is followed by in-depth studies of the ancient civilizations located in Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome.  Emphasis is place upon the skills of researching, interpreting and organizing information.  The course also strives to encourage analysis of the past in connecting it to the present.

 

Exams Midterm and Final worth 10%.  Study skills unit is covered in preparation.

Course Content Overview World Civilizations 500-1600 CEGrade 8 Social Studies begins with a study of Europe from the early to the late Middle Ages with a focus on the Renaissance and the Age of Exploration later in the course.  Other cultures studied include the Islamic World, China and Japan. Emphasis is place upon the skills of researching, interpreting and organizing information.  The course also strives to encourage analysis of the past in connecting it to the present.

Course Content Overview Society and Culture:  Europe and North America from 1500 to 1815
Social Studies 9 is divided into two halves.  The first half of our course examines the English Civil War, French Revolution, Napoleonic Era and the Industrial Revolution.  These historical periods and events are have much to teach of the origins of democratic principles and form historical roots for Canada.  The second half of our course studies the geographic regions of North America and the lives of Canada’s First Nations people prior to European arrival.  From there we move on to the exploration, settlement, trade and resulting conflicts in North America.  Emphasis is place upon the skills of researching, interpreting and organizing information.  The course also strives to encourage analysis of the past in connecting it to the present.
