Grade Two
Grade Two
The Second Grade Program aims to enable students to become independent thinkers while building on and expanding the basic skills acquired in previous grades. This is a year when independent reading and writing are developed in various forms. There is a focus on reading, appreciating and writing poetry and other genres of writing. One of the students’ favourite units is a Robert Munsch author study.
Students develop problem-solving and real-life application skills in Mathematics. The themes of Community, Canada, Mapping and Pioneers are explored in our Social Studies program. In Science we discover Matter, Animal Growth and Development and Air, Water and Soil. Students will complete research presentations on mammals and a variety of hands-on experiments throughout the year.
The Grade Two class will:
- experience valuable field trips to a variety of places, including the Vernon Science Center, The Kelowna Art Gallery and the B.C. Orchard Industry Museum
- take part in a school wide public speaking competition, Spelling Bee and readathon
Students’ testimonial:
“Grade Two was my favourite grade. Mrs. Scherz was kind, sweet, and funny. My favourite part of Grade Two was making a structure out of one-hundred things on 100th Day. I had so much fun, learned new things, made new friends and had many laughs.” –Kirsten
“I thought Grade Two was awesome! I learned a lot, met many new friends and I had the best Grade Two teacher in the world. I really liked Drama and Art.” –Kennedy
“Grade Two at Aberdeen Hall is awesome because you get to learn and play. Also we get to learn French and Art! I love the Science experiments!” –Amira
“Grade Two at Aberdeen Hall is fun because we go on field trip like to the Vernon Science Center.” –Joshua
Parent testimonial:
“In 2008, we opted to move our daughter Kennedy into Aberdeen Hall and she started in Mrs. Scherz’s Grade Two class. Through the school year we noticed a profound, positive change in Kennedy’s attitude and enthusiasm for school and her growth through the year was what every parent hopes for. Without a doubt, it is the teaching skill and passion of Mrs. Scherz that made the most difference and we consider ourselves fortunate to have had her teach our daughter. The best part is that she will soon be teaching our second daughter who is now also a student at Aberdeen Hall.” –Cindy and Tyler Bollhorn
