Grade  Six

In Grade Six,studentscontinue to develop the confidence and skills to necessary to become independent learners and to take on more of a leadership role within the Six Pillars of Character program.  There is a focus on developing organizational and time management skills in preparation for Middle School.

Program highlights:

  • Students take on a weekly schedule that includes core courses with specialty teachers in Mathematics, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies.  This allows for enriched learning experiences and specialty equipment in the Science laboratory, Art and Band rooms.
  • Students learn interactively with SMART Boards and Interactive Smart Response systems available in each classroom.
  • Study Shakespeare as part of their Language Arts curriculum.
  • Continue to develop their knowledge of French using the AIM Gesture technique.
  • Students learn to play an instrument and to read music in our Band programme as part of the School’s Concert or Show band.
  • Organizational skills are developed as students learn to keep track of their daily homework and long-term assignments in each class.
  • Grade Six students embark on their first “Horizons Week” trip to Victoria, BC. During this excursion, students visit several important historical and political landmarks including the Provincial Legislature building and Government House . In addition, students visit the Bug Zoo and Royal BC Museum.
  • All Grade Six Students take part in our Annual “Eureka Science Fair”, where they learn the about the process of Science and apply the scientific method.  Students have an opportunity to stretch their imaginations, creativity and to develop their inquiry skills.
  • Our annual Spelling Bee, Public Speaking Competition and Spring Production offer all Grade six students the opportunity to improve their speech arts skills, and to perform in front of an audience.
  • Students in Grade Six take part in our speaker series with special guests on speaking on topics that include:  Community service, Literature, Music, Science, Visual Arts, Remembrance Day and Personal Challenges.
  • In addition to instructing our students in the traditional sports, our Physical Education programme challenges students to take part in swimming, skating, repelling, gymnastics and skiing.
  • All Grade Six students attend various field trips to provincial museums, local historical sites, businesses and cultural institutions.
