Science

Robotics integrated into core curriculum

  • Grade 5: Human Body unit– model prosthetic leg
  • Grade 6: Extreme Environment unit – simple model of Canada arm from Space Shuttle
  • Grade 7: Ecosystems unit – model and program completion of scorpion robot
  • Grade 8: Completion of complex model and program for Mindstorm robot of choice
  • Grade 9: Original Mindstorm robot and program creation

Robotic Design Competition: Okanagan Robotic Games (teams compete in November, 2009)

Spaghetti Bridge Competition – Okanagan College (teams compete March 6th, 2009)

Science Fair: In-house competition (February, 2009); Central Okanagan Regional Science fair (April 7-8, 2009)

General Science:

  • Grade 6/7: Field Trips to explore various ecosystems

Mathematics

Math Contests – there are great opportunities for all students to participate

Math League Contest – Grades 4 to 8

Pascal Contest – This contest is for Grade 9 students and is very similar to the Math League Contest above.

Gauss contest for Grades 7 & 8 that can accompany the Pascal if students in Grade 7 & 8 want an extra challenge in addition to Math League.

Humanities

Thinkquest Webpages

Groups of interested students will be offered the chance to build a Thinkquest website based on a independent novel study. Groups will:

  • select their book,
  • set their own reading timelines,
  • review existing Thinkquest pages devoted to book studies
  • design a Thinkquest page of their own based on their text
  • build pages associated with their book
  • monitor and facilitate any discussion or interaction with their page

 

This I Believe:

A workshop for interested students will introduce the Website to:

  • Expose students to the many genres of responses
  • Help inspire students to compose their own responses
  • Teach students effective techniques for composing the 350-500 word “essays”
  • Students will be guided through the writing process as they compose their own “This I believe” responses
  • Responses can be submitted
  • Successful candidates will have their responses published on the site

 

Public Speaking Event:

Objective: Each participant will research their topic, organize and compose a persuasive speech, and deliver this speech in front of a group of their teachers and peers. Students will improve their understanding of the writing process, and will gain competence in speech arts. Finally, students will gain deeper understanding of issues that face our local and global community.

  All participants will be provided with a topic and a bias. Each topic has a matching discussion page on the following Website:
